GROUNDING TECHNIQUE #2:
MEDITATION ON THE HEARTBEAT
THE RHYTHM OF YOUR HEARTBEAT and the rhythm of your breath can function independently,
or they can work in perfect synch. Most of the time, their rhythms tend to be independent. When
their rhythms become synchronized, however, your heart and breath both function at much higher
levels of efficiency.
Meditation on the heartbeat will teach you how to synchronize your heartbeat with the movements
of your breath. This state of synchronicity strengthens every function of the heart and lungs. It enhances
the flow of prana moving through your system and brings new feelings of strength, peace, and wholeness
throughout the mind and body. People who suffer from panic attacks, shortness of breath, or heart-related problems, such as angina or arrhythmia (erratic heartbeat), will find this technique especially
helpful for reducing their negative symptoms.
This is how meditation on the heartbeat is done:
1- As usual, close your eyes and begin to meditate on your breath. Once you’re attuned to its movements,
do a few rounds of Tarzan and/or the gentle rapid breathing technique to wake up your breathing.
Once your breath is more open and flowing, focus your attention on your heartbeat without losing
track of your breath.
2- As you meditate on your breathing and your heartbeat at the very same time, their rhythms will
gradually come into synch. Don’t try to bring their rhythms into alignment by consciously controlling
their movements. Simply meditate on your breath and heartbeat simultaneously and their rhythms
will synchronize themselves.
3- As the rhythms of your breath and heart come into synch, new feelings of peace, wholeness, and
inner well-being will gradually permeate your mind and body. The longer you stay in this synchronized
state, the deeper and stronger these feelings will become.
4- Your heartbeat is present in every artery, vein, and capillary in your body. By feeling your heart’s
pulsation as fully as you can throughout your body, the beneficial effects of this technique will become
greatly multiplied.
